An innovative, remote approach was called on for the inspection of a new skin pass mill for a metallurgical company in China’s Guangxi Province.

The CISDI-supplied mill was scrutinised by Shenglong Metallurgical Co at a Cloud meeting for its 2,250mm hot rolling line.

The 312-tonne skin pass mill, which is 7.5 metres high and 3.5 metres wide and has a maximum rolling force of 18,000 kilonewtons, will be a crucial addition to Shenglong’s rolling line. The equipment is classified as a Grade A item, which requires both customer and supplier to attend and witness inspections at the place of manufacture. 

Instead of bringing Shenglong's team to CISDI’s manufacturing shop, the scrutinisation was carried out via a Cloud meeting.

Shenglong’s team were able to enter the equipment virtually and follow CISDI's cameras, gauges and tools as the detailed checks were made.

In one day, all necessary inspections were carried out, including checks on the designed interval gap, the mill’s levelness, elevation, verticality and movement, and all designed indicators were achieved.

The highly precise dimensions of the mill stand’s verticality and levelness and the inter-stand’s levelness were found to be less than 0.05mm/m in deviation.

The mill will play a vital role in coil dividing and skin passing of strips ranging from 1.2mm in thickness to 6.35mm and in widths of 900mm to 2,130mm.
